“Start at the beginning,” people say — but what does that actually look like? It’s not always easy to figure out.
For me, the foundations are where it all begins. What I know from my own journey is that it all starts with you.
Without firm foundations, you can’t hope to build anything solid on top — something that will last and stand you in good stead during the rocky times.
It’s our sleep, our exercise, what we eat, our connection with others, time on our own and how we spend it – how much we binge-watch Netflix or doomscroll on our phones – and our relationship with alcohol. All these things contribute to how well (or not) our nervous system copes with what life throws at us — and ultimately, how we show up.
Get those things right, and you become:
Stronger
More resilient
Less overwhelmed
Better able to cope with curveballs and external pressures
This ultimately leads to a happier, healthier you — with the space to think, and to show up as the best version of you.
The foundations are what I come back to every time I need to reset when life throws me off balance.
You might be thinking that something so basic couldn’t possibly make a difference… but you’d be surprised.
This is my invitation to you — give it a go.
It could be:
Sitting outside in daylight (if you’re in the UK, you’ll understand why I didn’t say sunlight!) with your morning cuppa
Reading a couple of pages of your favourite book instead of blindly scrolling through every TV channel
A walk in nature — or just around the block in your neighbourhood
I wanted to use my phone less, so I bought a good old-fashioned alarm clock — that’s it.
18 months on, I have better quality and longer sleep, more energy in my day, and I’m using my phone less — I’m taking the win!
That one small change led to:
Taking a break from alcohol
Starting a business
Experiencing deeper connection with friends
Getting more done in my day
The ripple effect has been amazing!
And more importantly — can you commit to it every day?
This isn’t about making huge, impractical changes to your life that aren’t achievable.
It’s about doing something different. Just one thing.
Could you:
Go to bed 30 minutes earlier?
Leave your phone downstairs overnight?
Ditch the mid-week glass of wine or beer for an alcohol-free version?
Find 3 things you’re grateful for at the end of the day?
Go for a walk without music or a podcast — just you and your thoughts?
Picking one thing to improve each day can take as little as 5 minutes and make a huge difference over time — not just to you, but to those around you.
A beginner’s mind, for me, means taking things back to basics and using your experience to relearn and grow.
As Heraclitus said:
“No man steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”
My invitation to you is this:
Pick one foundation you want to improve. Choose one action that will make a difference and make it achievable for you.
I’d love to know how you get on with a beginner’s mind.
With love,
Nicky
